Overview

Tour Expert has been planning and guiding private tours across Poland since 1989, with a licensed guide credential covering Poland and all of Europe since 1995. We are a fully licensed EU tour operator based in Krakow, and our guiding team includes people who came of age under the People’s Republic of Poland and remember the Solidarity years firsthand. That lived perspective, not a script read from a guidebook, is what shapes every stop on this tour.

Built for Travellers From…

North America

If Auschwitz and the Old Town covered the Second World War and medieval Poland, Nowa Huta fills in the Cold War chapter: a half-day, fully private car tour that explains how communist Poland actually worked, and how it fell.

UK and Ireland

Nowa Huta’s Solidarity story is a trade union story: steelworkers organising, striking and ultimately reshaping a nation, told a short private drive from your Krakow hotel and easily fitted into a city-break afternoon.

Australia and New Zealand

Having come this far for Europe, spend half a day somewhere most visitors skip entirely: a complete, still-inhabited planned socialist city, seen privately and at your own pace.

India

Nowa Huta’s story of a planned industrial city and the people who reshaped it politically offers a striking parallel for travellers interested in twentieth-century nation-building, with vegetarian-friendly dining available at an authentic milk bar along the way.

Trip Description

Nowa Huta is one of Krakow’s most compelling districts and unlike anywhere else in Poland: a socialist model city planned and built from scratch from 1949, conceived as a showcase of communist urban planning and a deliberate counterweight to the intellectual, Catholic, historically bourgeois Old Town a few kilometres away. Broad boulevards radiate from a monumental central square, apartment blocks were designed as self-contained neighbourhood units, and at its heart sat one of Europe’s largest steelworks, built to anchor an entirely new working class.

That plan did not go as intended. Through the 1980s, Nowa Huta’s steelworkers became one of the engines of the Solidarity movement, and the district’s streets saw regular demonstrations met with militia crackdowns, tear gas and water cannon. The protests that began here fed directly into the political changes that transformed Poland and Central-Eastern Europe by the end of the decade. Your Tour Expert driver-guide walks you through that history at the actual locations where it happened, alongside the district’s Socialist Realist architecture and its unexpected sevenhundred-year-old medieval abbey.

This is a private, door-to-door experience: pickup at your Krakow hotel, apartment or agreed meeting point, roughly twenty minutes by private car to Nowa Huta, a flexible route through the district’s key communist-era landmarks, and a return drop-off at your preferred Krakow location.
